Do You Have Gum Disease?

With connections to conditions like diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and premature birth, gum disease poses a serious risk.

Most people barely know what gum disease is and yet it affects an average of 50% of American adults. That figure jumps to 70% for senior citizens.

It’s worth taking a minute to consider whether you’re also a victim.

What Is Periodontitis?

Known medically as periodontitis, gum disease is a combination of conditions. It starts out with bacteria invading the gum tissues, triggering inflammation. The situation worsens when the body’s own defenses cause an influx of chemicals that break down the ligaments and bone holding teeth in place.

Bacteria fuel inflammation, which keeps the destructive process going.

Signs of Gum Disease

Various stages of periodontitis are marked by symptoms like:

  • Persistent bad breath
  • Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing
  • Puffy gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Pus coming from the gum line
  • Gum recession

If you haven’t had a professional dental cleaning and checkup in several years, then there’s a good chance your gums need some special care.

How to Fight Gum Disease

Virtually everyone in the world already has gum disease-causing germs in their mouths.

So this isn’t a matter of avoiding contagion. It has more to do with limiting the growth of bacteria.

Daily brushing and flossing to remove plaque are the most important ways you can avoid gum disease. An antibacterial mouthwash may also help you prevent the beginning stages of inflammation.

Never underestimate gum disease. It does not heal on its own and is likely to worsen if not treated.

If you suspect that you may have periodontitis, schedule a comprehensive gum health evaluation in Ellis County with our Midlothian team at River Ranch Dental.
